Gortdroge verhandeling die evenwel helder neerzet waarom het zelfbeeld van Wit Nederland (we zijn klein, lief en bedoelen het goed) een collectieve illusie is. Minder kramp, meer onderzoek naar de gevolgen van kolonisatie en de verstoorde systemen die nog steeds in stand zijn.

In explaining the book's contents to my family, I could check off every single response white Dutch individuals have to accusations of racism according to Wekker, in attempt to preserve their self- and group-image. This real-world reflection brought the book up from a 3.5 to a 4 to be honest. The main points of this book should be part of educational curricula across the Netherlands.

Het hoofdstuk over zwarte piet is heel erg interessant en was ik zo doorheen. De rest van het boek is echter slecht gestructureerd en moeilijk te lezen. Het is zeker een boek wat licht schijnt op de Nederlandse context betreffende racisme, dus het is nog steeds een boek dat ik zou aanraden om te lezen. Het is alleen jammer van de structuur.

Ik heb momenteel zoveel boeken die ik moet lezen voor 'Structuur en conflict in het Globale Zuiden'. Ik moet dus prioriteiten stellen. Dit boek was niet slecht, maar het was wel zeer academisch geschreven, dus las het niet zo vlot. Het was ook enorm toegespitst op de Nederlandse context, dus toch nog een stuk van mij verwijderd. Mijn voorkeur gaat er nu naar uit om op andere boeken te focussen. Misschien keer ik in de toekomst wel nog terug.
