This is less of an all-American-boy-turned-serial-killer story as much as it is a demonstration of how communities enable abusers to get away with monstrous acts because of their refusal to truly listen to victims.

The hidden evil of serial rapists and murderers is a bit complex, but with the trend in popular media surrounding them, the similarities in their stories is beginning to provide clarity. It's quite difficult to accurately predict or discern "the demon next door," but that isn't to say smoke doesn't exist.

I got this book for my monthly Audible selection, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have listened to it. If you’re interested in true crime, this is an excellent book for you!
It was really interesting to see how his community banded behind him, but not surprising. No one wants to believe that the all-American boy with the upstanding religious family could do anything wrong.
It is interesting how the victims were treated in the 70s and how slowly our society has evolved on that issue.
This does contain details about his rapes and murders, which might be a bit much for some listeners.

This was just an ok book for me, and maybe partially because of the narrator. I didn't feel like someone so "upbeat" should be narrating the story of rape and murder.

I got this one on a whim, not my typical genre, but thought I'd give it a listen. It isn't horrible, just not great.

As despicable as his crimes were, you'll be more disgusted by how his church, the town mayor and other prominent town members threatened to smear his first victim, allowing him to get off easy and rape and murder several more women.
