Wow.

This is every bit incredible as people say it is.

Jemisin’s writing is masterful, leading to gripping storytelling that keeps the reader puzzling pieces together. I really enjoyed how information was slowly funneled out. It left mystery to many bits and pieces along the way, and led to shocking connections and plot twists. It was hard to put this one down & I am already certain I’ll want to re-read it.

This book y'all! It was everything that I had hoped for and then some plus a little bit more. It is about the end of the world, but not in the way that you think. Which is even more wonderful when you think about it. The title threw me for a while ... I don't know why I didn't get it being that there are four seasons and ths Fifth Season is when the world ends (sort of). I won't spoil the book by giving away too many details. Just know that it's glorious...there is magic (of a sort), so many people of color, tragedy, love, grief, moments of peace and happiness. There's some not great stuff too, because...balance. We see the evil that men do (and by "men" I mean all humankind). There's blatant hatred of those seen as "other" and the systematic dehumanization and degradation of those deemed not human. It was sad and disheartening, but there was always a seed of hope. No matter what happened, no matter how much pain and suffering Damaya/Syenite/Essun endure, there is always hope. Until it's gone.
Definitely a favorite and I highly recommend.

This book really sets the bar for sci-fi/fantasy for me. I only hate that I waited so long to get to it.
The world of the Fifth Season is completely unlike anything I've ever read before -- which is part of the reason I'm unsure if it is science-fiction or fantasy... I hope as I continue through the trilogy I will be able to decide. Not only is the world of the novel lushly, carefully, and fully built, but the characters are diverse, complicated, and complex. The narrative style of this book is really incredible -- I didn't figure out what was going on until about 2/3 of the way through, and it was such a satisfying realization as I finally figured out how the three seemingly disparate stories wove into one. This book really ticks every box for me -- it was beautifully written, had great and diverse characters, a really scary and cool world, solid mythology and psychology, and overall said something really important about how we humans treat one another. This is a must read for any sci-fi/fantasy fan, or anyone trying to add some richness to their reading world.
