Plot is a bit slow in the beginning, but when it picks up...whoo. I think I read the second half of this book in 2 days. I could not put it down. Jemisin's way with words is magical. The magic(?) system is unique and the world-building leaves enough to the reader to really feel like you're there, but as like a visitor, not a native. The characters are flawed and believable. The themes are real and raw and the way Jemisin handles them is poignant, but not cliche. The best parts of this book are definitely Jemisin's writing style (I have over 200 highlights and notes...which is a lot) and the character building. Overall rating 4.05. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

The Fifth Season was a fun read for me, someone trying to branch out into different genres and get back into reading. I found it more gripping in the second half than the first, but this didn't deter me too much from finishing it relatively quickly. I'd recommend this to someone looking to dip their toes into fantasy. The world-building can get a bit dense at points, but not so much that it's difficult to follow. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and found it very entertaining!

I think I'll always be partial to authors who are clearly trying to push the envelope and try new things. The first 300 or so pages of this book are incredible. There's a whole bunch of big twists, and Essun is a wonderfully flawed character. I will also probably remember the opening line to this book forever. I think the set-up was so compelling that my mind just went racing with lofty expectations, and the final couple of reveals weren't quite as cool as what my brain conjured up. Awesome book though.

Me ha encantado la estructura, la historia cada vez me ha ido atrapando más (aunque engancha desde el principio) y los temas que trata son interesantes. Además, releer el prólogo al final, teniendo el contexto, es bastante satisfactorio.

This is not a fast read. The world building is immense and complicated. The characters can be difficult but I quickly became invested in them. There are many twists and turns and the author continues to keep the reader guessing.
