There was so much information in this book! I had a lot of “wow” moments, but there was so much information and the way it was presented was somewhat firehose-like, so I would have to pause and let my brain catch up sometimes. I’m not sure if I could recall a single specific fact, but the general premise that forests are amazing and much more complex than most people realize was present and clear on every page. There were plenty of opportunities for reflection, as well. I thought a lot about what humans value and how we see ourselves as part of, or separate from, nature. I liked the challenge of reframing my thinking to match the scale of life as a tree. I enjoyed the book and would recommend to anyone with even the slightest interest in nature writing.

I enjoyed it much more as an audiobook! Like listening to a docuseries on trees

This book has me looking at the trees in my own backyard a little differently and craving a walk in the woods. If you enjoy the sound of rustling leaves and the earthy smell of the forest floor, you will probably enjoy this book.

While perfectly lovely on its own and full of important information, the writing style is a bit prosaic. That worked for me, for others it might not. Especially since most of the time we are being shown an overview of an idea and in the process, a throwaway fact may get caught in the midst and tangle the net, so to speak.

I enjoyed this. It was an easy way to spend an afternoon and the chapters aren’t needlessly long. If you’re looking for an academic text and analysis, however, look elsewhere.
