Read for class. I enjoyed it, but I think this book just wasn't for me. Would be a great read for a middle or high schooler. I enjoyed the darker aspects, but wish it could have been more intense at times. Will tune for  Skyla Arnt's next books.

The world-building could've been more thorough, but I loved the vibe and atmosphere! The two protagonists were everything – I felt so sorry for Elwood but loved his soft nature and really liked Wil's feistyness and strength. The ending was heartbreaking, but very fitting.

(It's very YA, but that's okay.)

I loved the premise, and the cover, of this one. Both felt unique, and gave all the right vibes. And, the writing was certainly atmospheric, but as a whole, the book fell a little flat for me.

The bits of horror that I got were outstanding. I really loved the ending, and still keep thinking about it, but there wasn't enough horror, and the romance just didn't have the chemistry I wanted. The characters also could have been a little more fleshed out.

It was an easy read. It was a worthwhile read. It just wasn't the great read I had expected. It just needed more. More horror. More feeling. More sparks. More character building.

I did enjoy that the main characters were not stereotypical to their genders, or societal roles. I enjoyed the Goosebumps feel that I got from the story, and I enjoyed the nostalgia found within the pages, and the references, along with the fact that the story didn't bring up all the modern bs with new technology and social media. It was a decent debut, and I would be willing to read more from this author.

Please check trigger warnings before reading, especially when you have triggers surrounding religious trauma, child abuse, animal death/sacrifice and/or have a fear of bugs. The trigger warnings listed on the site of the author are not a complete list.

This was one of my most anticipated reads and it did not entirely live up to the expectations I had. I had a difficult time really getting into the book, neither of the characters really stood out as loveable. Elwood a bit more than Wil. Wil mostly came across as irrationally angry and spiteful towards her former best friend who chose his family over her. But as she "jokes" somewhere in the beginning she is very well aware that he is being abused by his parents so it shouldn't really have come as a surprise that he would remain loyal to his family.

While I wasn't a fan of the start, near the end things started to pick up, unravel and come together and that's when I started enjoying the book. I know lot of people were unhappy about the ending, but I actually really liked.

All in all I think this book has a lot of potential, but there are definitely some improvements to be made. And I would definitely love to see a more extensive list of trigger warnings for this book.
