Perfectly crafted
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was phenomenal. The writing was amazing, perfectly crafted. Alys Arden did an amazing job bringing her twist on vampires. I've never been to New Orleans, but if I ever do, I'm sure to think of this book. Can't wait to check out the sequel!

I loved this book so much I really loved how it depicted vampires as monsters not just something to romance although a love interest is a vampire that is neither here or there. I loved the characters especially Adele she was at first just a girl that had finally came home for her only to end up in something she did not understand at first involving a curse and vampires she was a really well written character. I loved the plot it starts with a couple people finally coming home after a hurricane moves on to being about witches and vampires a curse involving them and the MC's ancestor I really loved how the story played out and I enjoyed reading the ending looking forward to reading more soon.
Quick, weekend read with romantic, paranormal, and modern (with some historical) themes.
Pacing is somewhat slow in the first half and there are some minor/tiny plot points that were not as addressed as I thought they would be. (I doubt anyone else would be bothered by them though.) And yet other things felt painfully obvious.
Still a fun read and looking forward to the other books.

The absolute best part of this book is the way it breathes with the culture and color of New Orleans. Every local detail is perfect, from the flamboyant unique characters, to their love of celebration and art of every kind, to the devastation of the hurricane, with callbacks to many local businesses and local delicacies. I love the tone, and how it slips between moldy, how-do-we-get-canned-beans reality, and a touch of the fantastical. How in that city, it seems not only possible but likely that vampires and witches slip between the fog-hung glow of the gaslamps...and probably walk into the Walmart right alongside you. I reveled in that atmosphere and enjoyed the virtual visit to a city I love so much, historically and in its contemporary version. It was lovely to slip between the early, french-influcenced days of the city and its present form.
The reason I'm rating this four stars rather than five is just a few detail slips and false trails that led to nowhere, (like with the whole prep school that was introduced), a magic system that could have used a few more weaknesses, and some flat love interests. I never could get interested in any of the heroine's love interests (which would have really raised the stakes on the story for me) and her reaction to finding out she was able to control magic felt completely unrealistic to me.
I did love the way the historical mystery came together with the present day magical plot, and the camaraderie of the coven, including that it did not include just women. The suspense was fun and the ending laid good groundwork for future books. I liked how the french language was woven throughout, and how many different kinds of creativity was included in the book. Overall an enjoyable read, especially for fans of New Orleans.

I fell in love. I fell in love with a story. I fell in love with amazing characters and on top of it I fell in love with an amazing author : Alys Arden.
When I first began to read the Casquette Girls, I noticed that the principal character (Adele) was a 16 years old teenage girl. At that point, I did ponder whether or not to read the book. I finally said What The Hell! Let’s give it a try! I was not disappointed at all of my choice, in fact I did not have had that much fun reading a novel since I read Harry Potter, more than 10 years ago. I always been a huge fun of the TV series Charmed, that explained why I was attracted to this book. I am not in the niche market at all for that kind of book, a 36 years old professional male. The fact I am giving it 5 stars is proving that this story has a quality that will be pleasing to a large audience .
I have been given this book in exchange of an honest review and that it is exactly what I am writing right now. All the elements are present to make it a fascinating book: Witches, Vampires, and old diary and lot of secrets and mysteries. Only one word can describe it : Magical!
New Orleans Description in the book was a highlight of the novel, I felt like I was there. I could feel the vibe of the city, the wind, it was masterfully done. I never went there, but this book made me feel that was right into the middle of the French quarter. Characters were awesome! I especially loved Desiree and Isaac, they were believable and had fun trying to guess what will be their next action! The Medicis clan was amazing (I won’t name them all!! I don’t want to spoil your fun to read the book!!) But Gabriel and Nico are quite fascinating, I was not able to get myself to hate them, they have something quite likely about them!! And for the plat de résitance, I think that Adele character was very well built and developed. At some times she was almost irritating me though (but hey it is a girl of 16... that is part of the deal of being teen!). On a side note, I would a loved to have Brigitte (Adele’s mom) more present, that characters have a lot of depth even though she is mostly absent. It is causing a lot of emotion. Mac (Adele’s dad) is not as appealing as Brigitte for me!
The story is very well built. I absolutely love how the transition between the past (Adeline journal in the 1700) and the life of the Adele in the present era is done, in fact it is a success and it gives a huge plus to the story. The pace of the story is great, not too fast but enough to keep us craving for more... I must admit I was not able to quit reading at night.. I was telling myself :only one more page Fred… (and then I was looking my alarm clock and it was 15 minutes later and beginning a new chapter!). I brang my tablet at the office.. so I would be able to continue reading Casquette Girls on my breaks (Do I need to tell you that I can’t wait for the sequel?).
I am a French Canadian, therefore French is my first language. There is some French sentences/expression into this novel, I felt right at home! This being said, you don’t need to know French at all to be able to read this book. My only critic is that here and there, there are a couple of French sentences that were hard for me to decipher and some verbs that were used at the incorrect tense.
Can’t wait for the sequel!!! I hope we will get to know who are the 4 others covent descendant and I would love to read a book on Nico and Gabe story!!!! As you can see I am really enthusiastic, Miss Arden has gained a fan!!!

Started out strong but lost focus in the second half, and felt a little rambly in places. Also incredibly frustrating to read such modern language in the 1728 sections. Still very enjoyable read though.

I really, really liked this book.
At first I found it to be a little slow, the plot was slightly confusing, and I didn't connect to the characters. I honestly thought this was going to become another started yet unfinished book on my shelf.
But then, it clicked. After I made the conscious decision to power through, something about this book changed for me. I adored the settings, the characters stirred real emotions in me, and the blending of elements (past and present, french and english) had me falling in love.
Another thing I loved about this book was the fact that it kept me guessing. I'm the kind of person that can figure out the end of a book/movie/tv show when I'm only half way through. I found that this book, however, continually revealed plot twists that even I had not seen coming or made connections that I was too slow to see. (For the record, I had not really done much research into this book before I started reading, so that factored in)
This book is one of the first I've enjoyed in a long time, and I wish there were more like it. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because of the slow beginning, other than that is was absolutely magnifique
