This was an OK read. It wasn't the most original but it was a nice and easy read that didn't require too much thought. There are a lot of similar books out there.
The main character is Adele a teenage girl in New Orleans after the storm of the century. Adele wants nothing more than for the whole city to go back to normal but instead it seems to spiral into the complete unknown. Getting caught in the supernatural downtown of New Orleans. Waking up a family curse and getting caught up in a whole host of other strange things.
There are a lot of secondary characters but none I found particularly noteworthy.
The storyline is good but not that original, there are plenty of other books similar to this. The pacing is good although it does drag a little towards the middle.
2.5 stars an OK read

I did not realize this was a YA book. It is pretty good for that genre. I enjoyed the story and the backstory of the characters. I felt there were a few open ends, but I discovered this is a series and assume these will be addressed later. I am not likely to read further into the series, but if I received them for free, I would read them.
I picked this book up while exploring the garden district of New Orleans. Although it's not my favorite genre, this book was interesting and very creative. I enjoyed the feeling of being in the French quarter while reading. The story of the casquette orphans was one that I had never heard and it was very interesting. I didn't like the script font used to title each chapter because it was really squished and hard to read. If vodoo, witchcraft or vampires are your thing then this book is for you.
I'm glad I read this as part of the Extreme book nerd challenge 2019 for the category "book that you own but haven't read".

An eerie tale of the "Casquette girls" brought over from France to New Orleans with diaries, or as some suspect (or tall tales?) smuggled in vampires.
Adele had just returned from France after a devastating hurricane (my guess is Katrina.. The one that flooded the city even though it's not said which hurricane it was) and immediately feels uneasy as the devastation is horrible but she's also attacked in her home by a bird... Which feels like a creepy omen of the things to come.
I could feel the heartbreak but also the love that the city residents Adele is friends with and encounters all try their best with the hand that's been dealt to them. I'm interested enough to want to continue the series.

25% in and other than a magically changing lightbulb, nothing has happened.
I have always been fascinated by New Orleans. Between this book and watching shows like True Blood and The Originals, I am so desperate to go visit there... Decent book overall. Reads like teenage fiction (which it is) but the writing is pretty decent.
Made me want to go to New Orleans
gave it 5 stars although really should be 4.5. enjoyed the book especially the historical mystery. good supernatural twists without being the usual vampire love story. and all the details and imagery of New Orleans gavee it flavor. would definitely recommend

EDIT: After reading The Romeo Catchers, I've decided to bump this up to a 3.75. YAY
I really torn between rating this lower or higher(???) and leaving it at a 3.
This is a really long book considering the first 50% lacked plot. It was setting things up for later and most of the stuff was boring and unnecessary.
The slow start combined with a obnoxious love triangle almost made me dnf this. And the whole vampire human love triangle seems like a no-brainer to me? Someone my age or a 300+ year old undead guy that drinks blood? The thought of someone licking their lips while looking at a bloody wound makes me want to throw up.
Another thing that made me queasy:
"Gabriel is like my father, my brother, my best friend. My lover." You guys, gross. VOM. Not ok. Even if that kind of connection is true of the relationship between vampire and maker in folklore(Idk, vampires aren't my thing), can we all agree to NOT.
I. Just. Don't. Like. It.
This isn't all complaints. I'm a sucker for things set in New Orleans so I will read the second book(it's on my kindle already). For being a 500+ page paranormal novel dealing with death and destruction, it's something I consider to be a beach read. This was light and fluffy and extremely easy to read. It was very entertaining and made me crave beignets and a cafe au lait.
Adele is a 16 year old and not nearly as annoying as I thought she would be. I prepared for the worst. She actually had refreshing moments of clarity in between her ignorant laments about a stupid ancient vampire. The one thing that really irked me was her whole "no secrets" thing as she proceeded to withhold information and tell secrets.
Note: I did listen to the audiobook(1.5x speed otherwise the narrator has a weird cadence and pacing issues) as well as read the ebook because my French is terrible and there's a lot of it.
