A great follow up to Defy the Stars. I love how Claudia Gray explores ethical complexities in an engaging way. Noemi and Abel have such well developed characters and distinct voices, which really shows through with the alternating POV chapters. Very excited to finish this series so these kiddos can get their happy ending!

Maybe a bit closer to a 3.5, but rounded down because I kept failing to pick this book back up.

I did enjoy Defy the Worlds, but looking back on it, I think I mostly enjoyed returning to the characters I saw in Defy the Stars. When I reflect on the actual happenings in this book, I don't feel particularly invested in the plot. It was entertaining, but didn't capture me nearly as much as the first one did. I thought it was a bit convoluted, and quickly grew tired of
Spoilerthe Simon storyline
. I also didn't really love the ending.

I do still really look forward to the next installment, as I'm very curious what will happen. I am too invested in these characters not to care, but I don't think this book was as good as the first one.

3.5/5
I think that the fact that I waited a week to read the last bit affects this review. The end part feels like a 3/5. That was when it felt more like a bridge for the next book rather than a story that could stand greatly on its own.
From the start to the climax and its descent is 4/5 stars. :-)

The middle ~200 pages were so boring and I was going to rate it 2 stars but the ending did pick up some. Definitely more of a filler book for the trilogy.

This is what greed does to humans, Abel thinks. It makes them ignore the love they have in favor of what they can never attain.

While I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first, it was a worthy installment - and THAT ENDING! Something terrible is happening on Genesis, and Noemi is too impatient and driven to wait for someone else to do what needs to be done about it. This headstrong, determined, selfless Catholic girl had my vote from the very beginning of Defy the Stars. She didn't let me down in this one, either. She is every bit the strong female - sensitive, thoughtful, concerned for others, strong, noble, unstoppable. Paired with Abel (can we talk about how hilarious his stream of consciousness can be?) we get a team like no other. They are dedicated to each other, but even moreso to what they believe is right.

This book saw developments to the story that completely blew me away, but I don't want to give away any spoilers. SIMON, THOUGH. I don't like to tell people what to read, but I can tell you that this might be your new favourite if you like math, science, space, technology, and wrestling with moral questions when you're trying to be entertained. This is a nonstop space opera.

I did have some issues though. During the first half of the book I was plagued with a persistent sense of this is so not as good as the first one, it feels so slapped together and why does it feel like Noemi isn't really a part of this story? Like she's just interviewing everyone? and why would those villains just tell her everything? UGH monologuing. However, I can say that it does get better as you go. You just need to stick it out.

4.5 stars.

I absolutely loved it! It was agonizing when Abel and Naomi were apart but I loved seeing them working independently from each other, which doesn't happen that often in romance books.

Simon was f*cking creepy as hell. I felt like I was reading FNAF with all the scary animatronics moving around.

I'm really nervous about the last book because of what I think Abel will do with Naomi but I hope the series ends well. I just love the story and writing so much! AAAHHHH!

The ending of this was complete BS.

Edited to add: Apparently there will be a third book, so I am now not as angry as I was.

More of a 2.5, really. Not quite as gripping as Defy the Stars. Found myself skimming a lot, but the ending of this book sounds like book 3 would be promising.
