I enjoyed this book, but as someone who’s been practicing minimalism for a little while, I didn’t feel this was different enough from other books on minimalism that I’ve read to warrant a whole book. I would’ve preferred an article or two talking about the how minimalism can be different if you come from an underprivileged background.
I liked that Platt has an entire section dedicated to the psychology of consumerism with snippets that specifically focus on the black experience. I also enjoyed her ‘for the culture’ side notes in general.
Additionally, I liked that she emphasized conscious consumption after you’ve completed the process getting rid of things, because that’s something that many other minimalists don’t address.
The book does get a bit repetitive, but it’s still a quick and easy read.
I definitely appreciate and value her perspective and could see how her experience could bring more people into minimalism. If you’re new to minimalism or if other books on minimalism haven’t worked for you, then I would definitely recommend this!

It's refreshing to read a take on minimalism that focuses on overconsumption and allows for cultural relevance as opposed to it being a purely aesthetic endeavor. The prompts and guides for understanding why we buy and collect so many things are infinitely useful for continually cultivating a life with intention and meaning. I'm excited to start my own minimalist journey!
