This is one of the best disability memoirs I've read. And by now, after years of navigating my own and my family's varied disabilities, I've read a lot of them. It's also one of the best cookbooks I own!
Breadsong is the story of Kitty Tait's recovery from a severe anxiety disorder that threw her life off course at the age of 14, and the story of how she discovered a passion that gave her the focus and drive she needed to help her recover. Kitty and her father, Al, take turns narrating their journey and experiences of illness, family life, nurturing Kitty's passion and talent and eventually setting up shop, all within the context of their friends, wider family and local community.
There is a lot I loved about this book, and one of the most interesting is how it is written collaboratively between Kitty and Al. I'm not aware of any other books that tackle memoir, care, and disability in this way (please tell me about any examples you can think of) and to me this is such a radical and beautiful way of talking about experiences that can be so isolating but are also fundamentally *not* occurring in isolation - people get ill, get looked after, and can recover alongside their communities, and ideally are held and supported by them too. This book beautifully conveys the idea of illness and recovery as a collaborative experience, but doesn't sugar coat it. Al's sections touch on his own frustrations, doubts and worries as his own life is turned upside down while he takes on the role of full time carer (and baker) to his teenage daughter. He writes with honesty and compassion towards both himself and Kitty.
The second half of the book is made up of bread recipes, many of which have been mentioned in the prose section. Me and Ulla have been baking our way through lots of them, and so far they have all been incredibly well written - clear and accessible, something which many bread books (I'm looking at you, Chad) can learn from - all without dumbing things down or removing the artistry. The miracle overnight loaf which involves no kneading is a total game changer and a brilliant introduction anyone whonis nervous to try their first loaf. It is where Kitty started, and Ulla baked 5 loaves of it the other week to give to their friends. It is delicious.
Kitty continues to bake prolifically and as well as baking, selling, writing and making brilliant bread based social media content, she has set up the Breaducation charity. Through this, she has taught people all over the UK and abroad the simple skills of breadmaking, and has shown how working with your hands to create something beautiful and useful can positively impact your mental health as well as the lives of those around you.

It was lovely reading this story about Kitty and how she pulled herself "back to life" - and truly inspirational to see how their village pulled together to help out.
The story itself was wonderful, and seeing how the recipes were developed over time was really interesting. I also liked the fact we hear from Kitty's point of view as well as her dad's, it gives a slightly different take on things as they occurred. I liked the little sketches dotted throughout the chapters.
The "real" pictures at the end were great, but I wish there were more earlier in the book so I knew who I was reading about. Some of the recipes are tricky, there are a lot of steps and I wasn't always sure it was looking like it's supposed to - not really for beginners. I've succeeded on a couple of bakes and failed on a couple of others so far.
Overall, an inspiring read that has the added bonus of a load of recipes to try!
*I received a complimentary copy of the book from TandemCollective and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever held. From the texture and colors of the cover to the texture and colors on the pages, it was clearly made with so much love. The first half is the most beautiful story about a daughter and her father and how baking bread taught them so much much about life and the second half is like a beautiful artisan scrapbook of recipes. I will never forget how this book made me feel. I will never look at bread the same and have a much deeper appreciation for the ways in which we can connect to our food because of this book. Kitty was such a joy to read about!

An absolutely lovely read! Gorgeously illustrated and a really beautiful testament to a deep passion for bread and baking and eating and everything fun. The book jumps between Kitty and her dad's perspectives and is all the better for it - it's great seeing both of them reflected equally in the final thing. The recipes look wonderful and I'll be trying out the first one tomorrow night!
