Like The Henna Artist, this book started pretty slow and gradually picked up steam. I was really interested in revisiting our cast of characters in Jaipur, but now 12 years later. There's always more drama to be had, more scandals to be covered up. I liked reading from the perspective of an adult Malik, who has gradually learned the realities of the world while keeping his spirit high, versus the perspective of an older Lakshmi, who is loyal and protective yet jaded. I really liked the themes of recognizing your own biases and that we are all complex humans who have unbidden desires, strained relationships, and many insecurities.
I don't think this book is for everyone though, as it is slow, and you have to just love the settings and characters a lot. It didn't blow me away like the first book did, and that is partly because I didn't love the plot line as much, and partly because I found Nimmi's POV to be a little annoying lol. Still well written though!

I enjoyed this, but found Nimmi very annoying.

I just loved the first book in this series and was excited to read this one. What was likeable about Lakshmi in the first book, balances on the verge of annoying in this one. Also, I don’t understand how the plot/story is connected to the title of the book

I liked seeing characters again from the earlier books and how they have grown, fan favorited such as Malik are enjoyable even though they are forced to be dumber and less competent than they were both as he’s a protagonist now, so he must take a long time to investigate and slowly figure things out.
Seeing Sheela evolution is interesting, specially when she quickly springs into action to save people when danger arises, quite a change of pace but cool.
It was interesting to have more of a mystery unraveling vibe.
My main problem is that it feels like half of this book is characters just reminding us of stuff that happened in the previous book, and sometimes stuff they’d already reminded us about earlier in this very book. Super annoying. Specially when I’m tryna know more about the events in this book.
Also it felt like the conflict between Nimmi and Lakshmi feels very artificial and follows the annoying pattern of the first one where Lakshmi doesn’t really do anything wrong but continually takes abuse from a younger sister of sorts, and that, especially Nimmi's big eruption at her near the end, feel like they are never really reckoned with or properly apologized for.
