enjoyed the weaving of narratives, but I wish there was a more detailed depiction of the Muslim experience in Jaipur

The sequel to The Henna Artist, but it felt more like a constant reminder of everything that happened in The Henna Artist. At first, I appreciated the recaps because it’s been almost two years since I’ve read it - so the details were a bit foggy - but if we’re 200 pages or more into the story, the time for recapping has to be finished. It felt like certain elements were recapped multiple times throughout when one time would’ve sufficed.
Probably the last 100 or so pages were the strongest and felt more action driven. I could’ve done without the love story between Malik and Nimmi. (Honestly, I could’ve done without Nimmi in general, which other reviewers have also expressed).
When the story was more focused on Malik, his work, his relationship with Lakshmi, and their dedication to uncovering the truth and protecting an innocent man - that’s when I was locked in.

Like The Henna Artist, I listened to this on Audible. I would highly recommend listening to it. It made the phrases - in Hindi, I believe - easier to understand in context. And hearing them spoken correctly was so much more beautiful than what I would have said in my head.
