Nearly a millennium and a half after it left Earth the generation ship Aeon has arrived at the planet Gotayel. The inhabitants of the planet are human. They’ve been working on terraforming their new home for some time when Aeon arrives. To them the starship is a marvel of antique technology. It’s even more fascinating to the other humans they meet in orbit around Gotayel, the delegation from the star city of Avendis. To them Aeon is an artifact filled with the ancient mysteries of space flight. The Avendisans navigate space in what they term “point-set starflight.” It’s a technology that does not operate in normal space-time and allows them to move faster than the speed of light. The astronauts of Aeon and the inhabitants of Gorayel hope they would be willing to share this advanced technology.

A junket to Avendis sets off with the shuttle Lodestar from Aeon firmly attached to the Avendisan ambassador’s space-yacht. Inside the parties from Aeon and Avendis try to diplomatically size each other up. Both have a history that they’re not willing to share with the other side. But when they’re suddenly thrown off course, survival depends on everyone aboard.

Unlike the large cast of characters and the gently paced unfolding discoveries of hostile and benign environments and forces in the previous volumes in this series, author, pilot and theologian Latner moves from the large stage to the small, with this action-packed tale of survival and escape with a small crew of distinctive characters in an uncommon vessel. Also making first appearances in this volume are reptilian or maybe avian aliens in spacesuits, carnivorous bug-eyed monsters, and friendly but mischievous energy sprites.

I loved every bit of this book. Some Hollywood or Bollywood mogul with a big budget needs to buy the film rights.
