A Japanese counterpart to Sun Tzu's The Art of War. A fair amount of this one isn't relevant to most modern life, as it has to do with specific techniques of dueling with a sword, but some of that can be generalized to conflict in general. Also, although it mentions in several places that the same principles apply to leading one group in conflict with another, Sun Tzu's book is more concrete in that regard. Still, a lot of this is widely applicable to human conflict in general.
This edition comes with a bonus, a translation (also by Thomas Cleary) of another ancient Japanese military text, The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyū Munemori. Interesting, because some of the ideas in the two books here agree and some don't, though those are usually in regard to swordfighting technique.
If I was going to hand someone half a dozen books to read to start a self-education in basic military science, this would be one (along with Sun Tzu, Liddell Hart, Machiavelli, and a couple of others.)

Deals mostly with how to fight in the literary manner. Contains techniques for defeating your opponent in all kinds of situations, and guidelines for killing.
I encountered but one chapter I thought to be relevant for contemporary life. This was about the 'sickness of the mind' from the book of family traditions on the art of war.
The other words weren't useful, nor well written, nor funny, nor insightful. At some point I thought I wasn't going to encounter another page without the phrase "This should be studied thoroughly".
Lots of paragraphs and with "This should be transmitted orally", or "This you can only grasp by practice." This makes sense as it is about learning how to fight. But I don't see any relevance in today's world.

This is an amazing book. Definitely on the same level of Sun Tzu's Art of War. People say this book surpasses it but from my point of view I cannot tell.
Infinitely insightful and I will definitely read again in the future.

Very informative and fairly interesting. Average read overall but hearing the thoughts and musings of someone who has risen to near legendary status is valuable.
