The Chemist

I have a love/hate relationship with Stephenie Meyer books. I get so absorbed in them but am ultimately left feeling like I wasted my time. The Host is one of my favorite books, The Chemist however falls much further on the other side of the spectrum. For supposedly being a book about a top secret interrogator, much of the book dragged and lacked the action I was anticipating. Not only that, but the romance which ended up being the focus of the novel felt so immature. I wanted to love this and be swept away like I have with some of her other books but this was in more or less words, disappointing.

My very favorite Stephanie Meyer book! I wish she had more like this!!!

I loved this book. It starts out a little choppy and uncomfortable but gets better and better. As always with Stephanie Meyers books, the writing is not good but the storytelling is so fun. She just has a way of getting the reader hooked. I was hoping for more forbidden romance as her other books all have so much. But I enjoyed the story even without that part. If you are looking for literary genius, don't read this book. If you want lighthearted fun, it's perfect.

Boy was this insufferable in parts. The first 200 pages or so had me wanting to DNF it so bad, but I was listening to the audiobook, and I have very few audiobooks in my collection, so I figured why not continue. It gets a little better as the plot picks up, but I found the characters very 2 dimensional and unrealistic, so I didn't really care what happened throughout the book. Some major issues for me:

  1. The first 200 pages felt like a cacophony of "I'm a girl but I wear my boy clothes to disguise myself as a boy, cuz I'm not a 'girl' girl, so I can look like a boy. Until I put on my 'girl' clothes and then I'm a girl until I look like a young boy cuz I'm a girl that's not a girly girl like those other girls"
  2. More particularly in the beginning, but also scattered throughout the novel, the author used non-specific language to describe items and groups in the book. e.g. "The enemies," "the bad guys," "the weapon," "the chemical mixture," "the safety measures." I'm sure the author did this to build a sense of mystery and suspense, but it came across as very lazy, under-researched writing and did nothing to make me curious about where the plot was going.

Overall, this was a totally forgettable, not great novel. If we could remove the first 100 - 200 pages, I could possibly validate giving this 3 stars, but everything considered, this is definitely one that I recommend passing on.

So far, so good.

Better than I thought. Action packed, a little over analytical. Female gets used by government for a job, finds out a lot of truths and gets revenge.

The climax felt a bit fast and the loose ends were tied up a little too simplistic. I'd like to read about life after all the missions, but that's just me.

If only Stephanie Meyer could get an editor....this book could have been good...at 1/2 the length.

I already had my mind set when I read several reviews before I began with this book. I was actually expecting a story that highlighted a lot the emotions of the characters and focused on the main events around that. However, I found out soon that the way the topics of the book were handled, were done in a very interesting manner. Action, suspense and a little bit of drama combined with just enough intensity to keep me on track until the end.

I recommend this book and I gave it 4 stars because I didn't like the ending (honestly, I was expecting a better one ;) )
