Thank goodness this is the last book in this series because Harper's relationship with her stepbrother was creeping me out. I know they're not blood relatives, but I just don't think it's a good idea to get it on with your stepbrother.
Call me crazy.
Call me crazy.
Well, that was a weird journey.
Grave Secret is the final book in the Harper Connelly series, this time combining both a mystery as we're used to with some personal issues. Harper can sense the dead, and she's called to a farm to inspect some graves. This leads to a chain of events which endangers both Harper's and Tolliver's lives, and those around them.
I'm not very sure what to say about this book. Usually I love Charlaine Harris novels, even though they're sometimes a bit too obvious or just (sorry) not that intelligent. Grave Secret however crossed the line of credibility though, and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I usually do with Harris' books.
One of my main gripes is Harper's reaction on death threats. And we're not talking about verbal/written threats here, we're talking about actual people with actual guns shooting at her. You'd think she'd leave the area. You'd think she'd go BATSHIT CRAZY because OMG there is someone SHOOTING at her and trying to KILL her. But nope. Cold badass that she is, the only concession she makes is getting a different hotel room, a few floors up. And she keeps thinking no one can get to her there. What?
Also, her relationship with Tolliver is still icky. I can't help it. It's just weird.
The mystery was interesting, but often takes the back-burner over the personal plot line. Tolliver's no-good dad has been released from prison and tries to get into contact with Tolliver and Harper's little sisters. In the end both get their resolution, but not in a way that was satisfactory for me. There were quite a few plot points raised yet never fully explained.
As far as the series goes, Grave Secret is the weakest book. Not even the appearance of Bernardo could save it for me.

I love this series ... I think its refreshing and interesting. I love the characters - Harper is such a fascinating person. I am sad to see that this is the last in the series because I really love it and would love to follow Harper and Tolliver on more adventures. Overall, really good book. I love Charlaine Harris overall and this was as good as anything she's written. Strong ending to the series.
well. a little bit predictable. but i like things tied up in a bow sometimes!
Ugh so repetitive. Over and over about the "not really siblings" and the bad homelife.
I was sad to see this was the last book of the series. But a lot of questions do get answered and it was the best out of all of her books in the series. I love how she ends the whole book it pleases the whole audience.
I just expected so much more from the supposed conclusion to the Harper Connelly series...oh well.
I was partially spoiled for the ending, but even if I hadn't been I still would have found this book unsatisfying. Compared to the rest of the series (which I adored) it felt rushed and slapped together. The conspiracy that unfolded didn't feel at all organic to what we already knew of the family. There really should have been more hints throughout the rest of the books if this was the direction it was going, if only to avoid the feeling of being rushed to tie up loose ends.
It was still enjoyable, just not up to the level of the previous books. It was good to see so much of Manfred again, and I would love to see a spin off based on his character.

The third book was so good I had high hopes for the 4th - but the conclusion seemed liked a forced end. Grave Secret made the entire series feel more morose.
