Very sad chapter in our collective history. This book shows the cruelty and depravity of the human race. We can only hope future generations never forget.
wow this book sure was long. heavy on military history and strategy.
An engaging, well-written account of Hitler's inner circle.
Perhaps a little long but nevertheless a captivating story of a lunatic who was very unlucky with a high school history teacher and extremely fortunate to be surrounded by leaders too lazy to do their due diligence
I don't intend to journey down this LONG, dark path again in another history of the Third Reich, so I won't be able to compare this one to anything. However, the fact that book is written based solely on first-person experience, captured Nazi documents, and court testimony makes me believe I've read a pretty definitive history on this period and location. The author is thorough to a fault. He does inject his opinions into the narrative regularly, but he delivers the facts and documents them well. Spectacular read.

A thorough and well-researched work, though dry and tough to get through in parts, this is a must read for anyone fascinated with WWII.

This 1600+ page giant of a book tells the story of a monster who came to rule a very large part of the world. Adolf Hitler's rise has an eerie resonance with today's US politics and is a textbook for what to avoid, but I'm not sure we can. It's an old book, released in 1960, but I'm sure it is still definitive, as Shirer was there while it all unfolded. And he had access to all kinds of Nazi paperwork. It's an amazing work of scholarship and entirely too frightening.
