Imagine, if you will, a tavern that contains the personification of the memoirs of several celebrities that were of the scene in the late 70s, and early 80s. Patti Smith (drinking her coffee, naturally), is holding court at a table telling stories about Robert Mapplethorpe that will enrapture you and break your heart simultaneously. Chrissy Hynde runs in and yells some word salad about drugs, but she’s easy to ignore. Elton John entertains you for hours on end with wild, hilarious stories.

And then, there’s Deborah Harry.

She’s in the corner of the bar, of course. There’s a drink in front of her that could be a cocktail or it could be not a cocktail, for all you know. She makes pleasantries about her day, and follows what’s going on. And then bursts out with something like, “Oh, Andy Warhol? I knew him. Did I ever tell you about the time...” and goes on to share a story so incredibly wild and insane that your jaw is now permanently dropped.

Face It is as close as you will ever get to this scenario, and it’s a worthy read for fans of the singer/actress and fans of the era. Harry talks lovingly about her escapades, her mistakes and her achievements in a voice full of pride and gratitude, and she pulls no punches, either. A delight from start to finish.

Totally fun. Always loved Debbie Harry and the trailblazer she has always been. Such a fun read and I love the candor she chooses to share with us. She’s just great.
