I liked the way the book was organised into final toasts to people in Maurice’s life. The gradual revelation of another story threads through. That’s an interesting concept. We think we know the life we’re living but as extras in other people’s lives we may have a huge impact. I thought this was well worth reading and shows a strength in story telling which I’d definitely like to read more of.
One star for the idea. One star for the protagonist's voice. One star for the narrator.

I picked this for my book club book, thinking it would spark a great discussion. Now I am not so sure. I thought this was just ok. Just another cranky old man story. I think the only part that saved this story was when he did talk about his son and wife and the love he felt. Maybe the whole coin thing was supposed to evolve into some great understanding of the meaning of life, but I never got there. Anyway, there were some good parts but overall just an average read for me.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming story at the same time - recommended if you love Irish brogue. You will be speaking like the Irish by the end of the book.
