This followed an older Butler’s (Mr Stevens) six day journey touring “through much of the finest countryside of England to the West Country” in his employer’s Ford. He reflected on his past employer as well as his current employer, relationships with others employed at Darlington Hall and more.
I had no idea where it was headed but was happy to read along and see what happened- Davey read this a year or so ago and loved it so that was my main motivation for reading it (and for reading it quite quickly), I wanted to know what all the fuss was about!

In terms of story not much happens, but this book is a great character study exploring the definition of greatness and dignity.
The entire book is written from the perspective of Stevens who is an unreliable narrator, which makes you wonder how much of his recollection was true and how much was what he perceived it to be instead, as Stevens himself mentions multiple times through the book that his recollection of events might have been a bit mixed up.
