Well, that was painfully mediocre, wasn't it? Plus, its connection to LOST is tenous at best - there are references to Widmore and Hanso and Paik (that's Sun's father's company, in case you can't remember) but little else. It does however go into many of the same themes that the TV series does, such as purgatory, light/dark, humanity, et cetera, and when it does, that's when it's at its best. And it's almost worth it to read the letter from Gary's Australian publisher. Walkabout Publishing! Nice!

Beyond that, with its shoddy fake noir writing, flat characters, and tin-eared dialogue, perhaps this manuscript was better off being chucked into the fire like Jack did on the island. LOST was an incredibly nuanced program with many facets that would be worth exploring in any tie-in literature. Too bad that none of it ever rises to the occasion.

If you are picking this up, like me, because you love LOST then STOP RIGHT NOW! This book is just trying to cash in on the Lost fans and it fails miserably both as a crime novel and a series link. There are sad attempts to make it relevant by naming some of the characters in the book with names from Lost which just made it look even more like a cheap piece of rubbish rushed out as a companion to the show. And oh, har har, Oceanic are even mentioned in it! Guffaw Guffaw indeed. If you want a decent thriller pick up Jeffery Deaver or James Patterson instead of this guff.

Being the avid LOST fan that I am (if you need proof, just scroll down the blog), I was really excited to read Bad Twin by Gary Troup. The "author" was a flight on Oceanic 815, and was killed off in the pilot. The book was peppered with small references to the show (Hanso, Widmore, Paik, Mr. Cluck, 8-15-16, Cindy the stewardess), and Troup's name is an anagram for PURGATORY. With the way that the flash-sideways played out in season six, I thought it'd be cool to get through.

Boy, was it a chore.

It was cheesy, bad noir. The detective was a coward, constantly unsure of himself. Why should I root for someone like that? Likable characters were few and far between -- and when they popped up, they weren't in the story for very long.

In the entire book, one paragraph (p. 98-99) was worth reading. It shined some light on what Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof's perception of purgatory might be. I won't ruin it here, though -- go make your way through this sludge on your own.

You cannot go into this book thinking it's going to be a literary masterpiece - it's not. It's easy to read and I enjoyed the story. There are quite a few little things that tie in with the LOST plot. If you go into the book thinking it's a companion of the show, you won't enjoy it. If you consider the book a small extension of the LOST universe, you'll surely enjoy it.

Okay, I read this because it was supposedly written by a passenger who was on Oceanic Flight 815 (LOST). It is a decent enough thriller.

What a waste of two lunch breaks. This is just a badly written book, and without the tie-in to Lost I never would have picked it up. Funny that such a well-written, well-plotted, twists-a-plenty show would inspire such a ridiculous novel. The connections to the series were so silly that they stuck out like a sore thumb (or lousy gimmick) than being clever.

Boring and no link to LOST at all

I wouldn't even really recommend this to LOST fans since it barely contains any extra info about the show. And it reads like a low-shelf potboiler mystery.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, as it is a detective story, and usually, I get bored :-)

I did find some interesting parellels with Lost, though I don't know if I would consider them clues, perhaps when it all ends, and everything is tied up (hope hope hope) it will make sense. I have added a few of my thoughts below, highlight to read so I don't ruin it if you haven't watched the season 4 finale yet.

John Locke was a philosopher? Hmmmmmmm

***unrelated to Bad Twin, but interesting for those of us who don't know our philosophers...

Seems even Locke's alias was a philosopher. Hmmmmmmmm

Cliff Widmore (and family) are the main focus throughout Bad Twin, how does Charles Widmore fit in???

The detective makes many observations about the various Islands...even the places that aren't islands (Helios) are compared to such.

And they talk of purgatory, and redemption. Could it truly be that the island IS purgatory? I have heard that rumor. again with the hmmmmmmmm
