I have read every one of Jodi Picoult's books, but just couldn't get into this one. It just didn't engage me in the same way. Still well written, just not my favorite.

This is classic Jodi Picoult - her writing just sucks you in and keeps you reading way past your bedtime! I really admire her as an author: although she's super-successful, in no way does she write "formula-fiction." Each of her novels is well researched and tackles a new grouping of subjects (in this case, music therapy, gay marriage/gay rights, embryo rights, and infertility/IVF). This novel has the added twist of containing a CD with a "track" to accompany each chapter, with original lyrics by Jodi Picoult and an original music score. What an original idea! (though I'm sad to say, I did not have the discipline to listen to one track a chapter...I just listened to it all after I had finished the book. I find her writing so even-handed - I always find myself agreeing with so much of what each side has to say as the issues are never black-and-white for me. Very entertaining and also very informative.

Okay, it would have been so much better if A, there wasn’t whole pages of the preacher preaching and basically copying and pasting Bible verses onto whole pages and B, if Zoe’s encounter with her childhood friend hadn’t felt like it was just thrown in to be like “see? She IS gay!!!”
And then Vanessa didn’t care about having kids and all of a sudden because of Zoe she’s like “yes kids yes.” I feel like you’d have to really give that a lot more thought being such a big decision??
Also Liddy and Max being together in the end?
Going through that whole court trial for Max to just be like “lol jk here” ?
I had these issues. But can’t lie, obviously was engaged enough to read it all the way through and enjoy it anyway, so.

Really nice story, didn't realize religion component would be so heavy (not really my thing) but still loved the book and the story overall.
