I can't explain why I love Maira Kalman's art as much as I do. It is odd and imaginative, representational and whimsical. She gestures towards perspective in one picture, does a decent imitation of a famous painting and then pulls off a masterful version of a dirty tenement sink. The short bits of text interspersed between the paintings, combined with the particular paintings she chose to include in this collection say a lot about her world views and personal history.

This "picture book" is no lightweight - in few words, it communicates so much. It is illustrated in Kalman's Matisse-like naïve style; she uses colour in amazing ways.
Moderate: Antisemitism
Minor: Death, Genocide, and Infidelity

Quick read-- sparse text and interesting art to accompany it.
