A long slow brooding book for anyone who wants a thick atmosphere and a slow burn mystery. The prose really emphasizes how little to do our FMC has beyond overthinking and feeling. She has little agency as a woman, especially a young one, Maxim is emotionally distant and unpredictable, she has no idea how to fit into her new society, and time drags on for us as it does for her. Of course anxieties would loom large for such a person.

I originally mistook this for a vampire novel, which gave me quite a different interpretation of the beginning, and false expectations for the trajectory of the plot. I realized my mistake and then had no expectations at all, and was taken on the same ride as our unnamed FMC. I mistrusted almost everyone. The "action" (mostly conversations and conclusions) picked up in the last quarter and then the story ended abruptly, with a clear implication but no relief to the tension of what anyone was to do about it.

یدونه کم کردم چون اوایلش یکنواختیش آزاردهنده بود، ولی از اواسط داستان واقعاً نمی‌شد کتاب و زمین گذاشت! یهو و بدون هیچ پیش‌زمینه‌ای تو یه لحظه ذهنم و منفجر کرد و از یکم بعد از ورودش به ماندرلی واقعاً پایین گذاشتن کتاب برام سخت بود. فوق العاده بود. خوشحالم که از ادبیات گوتیک به پیشنهاد یکی از دوستام ربه‌کا رو برای خوندن انتخاب کردم.
