With such beautiful writing this is quite a heavy going story interlaced with humorous moments. Whistle in the Dark gives the reader haunting insight into a family in difficulty; the strained mum and daughter relationship and the dad seemingly oblivious to these difficulties and the teenage daughter struggling with her own mental health. These difficulties are made worse after Lana disappears for 4 days during a mum and daughter holiday. It also covers the challenges that mental illness/difficulties experienced by all those affected (the doubt, the fear, the pain). This had me gripped - a mystery you’re desperate to solve, just like Jen, as you follow her internal monologue (riddled with doubts, fears and sometimes paranoia). What really happened to Lana in those missing 4 days? The ending had me in tears, so heartbreaking but also so life affirming - you’ll definitely need tissues!

What was the point of this book? First of all, every time I read about teenage girls who make their mother's lives miserable, I remember what a hard time my friends had with their daughters. Makes me happy I raised a boy.
Jen Maddox's 15-year-old daughter, Lana, disappears for four days. When she is found, she refuses to say where she was. That is the ENTIRE story, along with her mother constantly badgering her to tell her parents what happened. Her daughter is also suicidal.
I felt that reading this was a HUGE waste of time, sigh. My recommendation is "don't bother".

i would give this book 2 1/2 stars, but the author redeemed herself with an impressive writing style and a semi-satisfying ending.

This book started out with an intriguing and mysterious premise but it did not continue to be engaging. I quite enjoyed the intrigue in Elizabeth Is Missing and following the main character. I hoped for the same with this book. Unfortunately I quickly lost interest in the characters in this book. I just found them boring and a bit irritating. It was very much about the mother/daughter relationship - family dynamics and what I found to be tedious family conversations. This just didn't interest me personally. The book just really dragged for me. I couldn't wait for it to end. I would have given up but I kept with it hoping it would get better and to reach the conclusion. The last few pages of the book were definitely more intriguing and engaging. But it was a long time coming. I was definitely glad I borrowed this from the library only.

אוף, איזה ספר מאכזב. היו לי ציפיות, כי מאוד אהבתי את אליזבת איננה, אבל כגודל הציפייה כך גודל האכזבה.
הספר מספר על משפחה שהבת הצעירה נעלמת לארבעה ימים. רוב הספר מתרחש אחרי שמצאו אותה, יש כמה פלאשבקים לחופשה ממנה לאנה, הילדה, נעלמה. לאנה מתעקשת שלא קרה לה כלום במהלך אותם ארבעה ימים וחוסר הרצון שלה לשתף את אמא שלה במה שקרה גורם למתח רב בבית
הסיפור מסופר מנקודת המבט של האם, ג'ן. והיא אחת הדמויות המעצבנות ביותר שיצא לי לקרוא בזמן האחרון. זה כאילו אמה הילי לא הצליחה להחליט עד הסוף אם היא רוצה לכתוב ספר מתח או דרמה משפחתית ואז האם האמא היא משוגעת או בלשית? למה לא, נעשה את שניהם. גם לאנה, שהיא הגיבורה המרכזית השנייה, כתובה בצורה שלא מעוררת הזדהות אלא יותר כעס. אולי אם הספר היה כתוב דווקא מנקודת המבט שלה, הוא היה יותר מעניין

הספר כתוב בצורה של קטעים קטעים ואין לי בעיה עם זה, אבל התחביר היה על הפנים. מצאתי את עמי קרואת משפטים כמה פעמים בשביל לנסות להבין הכלל מה הכוונה. אני לא יודעת אם זה אשמת התרגום או שהספר ככה במקור, אבל בגלל שיש לי ניסיון טוב עם התרגומים של הוצאת סנדיק/תמיר, אני נוטה להאשים את המקור.
