this is a great book! it is, as many of jennifer wiener’s books are, cleverly disguised as a beach read when in fact it is smart, thoughtful, and incredibly emotional and thought-provoking. the book loses stars for having a messy and sometimes confusing timeline — maybe unavoidable due to two characters having the same name — and for the kind of unresolved ending. as in mrs. everything, the characters are so easy to root for and the villains are easy to hate. she captures modern family dynamics so, so, well.
as for content warnings, this book is centered around a case of sexual assault and the devastating aftermath. it is entirely unavoidable to not read this book and be thinking about that the entire time, so not exactly a relaxing read.

I'm disappointed there were no trigger warnings.

This book really reminded me of the cliché: "don't judge a book by its cover". After reading Big Summer, all the "fun and flirty" blurbs, and the inside jacket, I wasn't expecting something to be so dark and reflective on sexual assault... The first quarter of the book moved a little slow for me and I felt that although it addressed really important issues, some of the characters felt incomplete and the resolution of the conflict was lacking.
