if I didn’t listen to Morbid or have Alaina in mind while reading, I probably would have given it a lower rating, and my rating is already than expected.
I liked it because I could see Alaina’s personality within the book which felt special. However this book lacked so much depth. It had detail but no depth. I will forget these characters in the next week, we never really got to know either of the main characters outside of work or killing lol. and the ending was just so forgettable, even if it is a set up for a sequel. Reflecting, I wish the random af character that took Jeremy’s place at the end was of any relevance through the book. Why would u add a new character the last few pages of the book and the height of everything.. and then just end the book lol.. idk i feel disappointed in this as a whole. i think alaina has potential however, and I am looking forward to see how her writing progresses

I love Morbid and love Alaina’s ability to tell a story. The story of The Butcher and the Wren was brilliant. Her character development and dialog fell flat for me for the most part. I hope she continues telling her stories and look forward to watching her grow as an author.

Didn’t really grab my attention or leave me wanting more, even considering the ending.

Huge fan of the podcast, so consider this review biased.
I love reading horror/thrillers and the concept of this one was intriguing to me. I’m usually not a fan of split perspective story telling, but it worked for me in this book. I did not see every plot twist coming, but definitely caught some of them (ESPECIALLY the ending). One of my favorite aspects is the perspective Alaina (the author) brings to the table as an autopsy technician. She knows death, decomposition, human anatomy, and the autopsy process through experience. She was able to describe and plant vivid, grotesque scenes in my mind easily throughout the book. I look forward to reading the sequel to see if I will be surprised, or if I will predict the twists and turns.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this hook bc it has such mixed reviews. However I really enjoy this. It was DARK…very dark. But I felt it portrayed an evil serial killer well, and kept you guessing til the end. I give this book 4.25 ⭐️s and I really enjoyed it. I plan to read the second book when it comes out in September!
