Whenever I read fairytale retellings, I tend to be disappointed, but Heather Dixon Wallwork does such an amazing job using the source story and then creating it into something new and unique.

Entwined is based on The Twelve Dancing Princesses and it starts with the loss of the princesses' mother. The girls aren’t very close to their father and the relationship only gets worse after their mother’s death, and the rules for mourning they’re forced to abide by. It’s a book with a pretty grim setting but it still manages to be funny and warm.

While the story is mainly centered on Azalea and the sinister secrets that come from the enchanted passage that the girls dance in every night, it also touches on family and grief. At first I thought it was just going to be a story with a shitty father, but you really see the growth in how both father and daughters try to be better, and I really came to appreciate the father/daughter relationship.

Another subplot were the romances, because I wouldn’t necessarily label this book as a romance. But, there were romantic subplots for three of the sisters and I really enjoyed them all. It was really sweet seeing them all come together, and I enjoyed how Dixon made all three guys standout from each other.
