This series is really enjoyable. Great literature? Perhaps not, but well-written and fun, and for me it's difficult to go wrong with a book that implies there is magic in our world. I am looking forward to the third book.

This second installment was better than the first, with Diana showing more independence from Matthew, and asserting herself.

I think with any fantasy series that the world has to be created, even in low fantasy. However, the author does name drop (at least, I think it’s name dropping, I’m not sure who some 15th century celebs are!) and Matthew seems to know all of the important players. It takes a long time to get through the few months they’ve been in the past!

Hopefully, as the series closes, we can expect a little more action!

This series makes me feel so geeky. Do I understand any of the knot-tying/time traveling logistics? No. Do I enjoy the step back into history and interactions with historical figures, and the vampire/witch aspect? Hells yes

POV: multiple - first person and third person omniscient

You can expect: vampires, witches, magic, time walking, prophecies, history.

I loved The Discovery of Witches and had high hopes for Shadow of Night. I'm pleased to say they were met and exceeded. Almost all of this books takes place in the past, and between the lush descriptions of the clothing and setting, discovering more about the abilities of all the characters and learning the truths about so many mysteries, it felt like a luxurious journey through history.

Even though it had been a long time since I read the first book, Harkness dropped in just enough hints to catch me up to speed without feeling like a total regurgitation. I can't wait for the third, to see how all the threads will be woven together and to continue my journey with Diana and Matthew.
