While I was happy to read a book set in Natchez and be introduced to that part of the Delta, I found this book disappointing for two reasons. First - there's a bit of a "deus ex machina" component to it - Penn Cage calls in his "friends" who just happen to be able to access all sorts of information and skills that mere mortals can't (which is a good thing, since Iles has pitted him against a villain of mythological proportions). And second - Iles loves the sound of his own pen. He goes on and on in sections that are, at best, unimportant digressions. A good editor could have easily cut out a hundred pages and the book would have been much the better for it. And yes, this comment comes from the guy who loves the long winding narratives of Faulkner and James.
Consider yourself warned.

good book, but it would have been a much better one if more tightly edited.
Greg Iles writes a story that draws the reader in, invests them in the characters, and is full of descriptions that cause you to want to go to Natchez, Mississippi. Last summer I did, and standing on the bluff looking at the river, wandering rhe cemetery, and exploring the area, I entered the world of his novels.
He is one of my favorite authors and Penn Cage is someone I would love to meet.

This booked dragged on a little too long for me. Having read a number of books by Greg Iles, I’m beginning to feel a little concerned by his preoccupatiion with anal sex.
I have read and enjoyed 7 previous books by Iles but this one was a big, meandering mess. Way too long, 2 or 3 hundred pages could have been edited out to make a tight thriller but as it is it's just all over the place. I will not stop reading any of his books but this one was a huge disappoinment.
Picked this up at the Ludington State Park camp library. Read a few chapters, and had to put it back. Just too.....icky!
And now after reading some of the reviews here, I am GLAD I made the decision to abandon it! So why give it 4 or 5 stars when you clearly didn't enjoy reading the book?

Greg Iles is one of my favorite authors! While reading a 577 page book might seem daunting it just flies by so fast because it's hard to put down! I would have given this book a solid 5 star rating except that the dog fighting storyline was out of my comfort zone.
What is the deal with the ending of this book? Seriously?
