The Argonauts

I listened to this on Audible.com. A very thoughtful, didactic book that was not what I expected, other than in theme (feminism/gender studies). I downloaded it as it was recommended on a podcast I enjoy, but its title let me to expect something more allegorical. Heads up: there's no golden fleece: the near-constant stream of references to noted scholars in the field got to be an irritant.

"The Argonauts" is an academic work, peppered and enlivened with Nelson's personal story and nuanced way with words. I enjoyed its journey through much more current threads in gender studies than what I experienced in college over 20 years ago.

Just not for me

Sommige stukken (de persoonlijke verhalen) resoneerden erg met me. Andere (philosophical name dropping) totaal niet... Paar goede inzichten maar iets te pretentieus.

finished in an afternoon, absolutely loved it

Beautiful memoir writing exploring human nature with regard to gender, sexuality, and parenting. External texts are woven in and analyzed throughout. I was very entertained, the only reason I give four stars and not five is because some particular passages or sentences had me cringing slightly. This is why I could never write a memoir so who am I to judge really.

maggie again helping me dwell in my experience with less regard of how things are supposed to feel.
