There had to be more; And boy the drawing at the end of the book is the best part. The best parting gift knowing your grandparents will always watch over you. Iā€™m reading A Snake Falls To Earth now. Hope it meets my expectations just as this one did.

I will say. I went into this blind, and was expecting something a lot more compelling.

This book is okay; it's fine. Nothing I would rave about, but something I would casually recommend.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but this felt like a middle school read rather than young adult? I don't know why, but I keep imagining the MC as like.. 12-14 years old. (Actually, I think this book could've been better if it had been a MG haha!)

I was a huge fan of the concept, but not the plot. I don't care about vampires or cults or anything else. I wanted so bad to read more about Elatsoe's gift and the Lipan Apaches. I found it so much more interesting than the murder mystery that was happening in the foreground.

However, I'm always rooting for representation as an asexual native myself LOL !
Would def recommend to a younger audience. Nice little murder mystery with fantasy elements.

I started this book in May 2022. I had such high hopes for this, based on @booksandlala's and so many other people's positive reviews. I DRAGGED myself through the first 100 pages, and thought I it wasn't for me, and that I should've known better because I rarely enjoy masgical realism... I put the book down and didn't pick it up again before yesterday (Jan 3rd). I've finished the rest in about 3 hours, I cannot believe it. This is the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars, because I can't remember if it was a slow beginning or if I just picked up the book at the wrong time. Definitely rereading this, and hoping it'll be a 5 star read! šŸŒŸšŸŒŸ

I read this book exactly when I needed to. Grief is explored in a meaningful way, but is never gratuitous or burdensome, so I found it restorative as I processed the loss of a family member. The narrative voice is warm and inviting, and I felt genuine affection for the characters.

What really kept me engaged and in awe of this book was the folklore and mythology woven in, and the vast "slightly different" America the author created. I did like the characters and wanted to know how the plot would play out, but I wasn't 100% enthralled? It's probably part genre (my tastes lean less magical realism and more high fantasy) and part relationship-based (I'm a basic bitch that requires romance lol). Overall, it was a pleasant listening experience and I would absolutely recommend.

4.25 out of 5 stars, ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜†
