This was a fun and original YA fantasy. Elatsoe can summon the ghosts of creatures and humans alike and finds herself uncovering the mystery of her cousin’s death after his ghost reveals to her his killer. With her ghost dog compaction, Kirby, she embarks on a journey that reveals to her and the reader the impacts of Native oppression, the importance of culture, and just how inportant friends and family are.
Loved how family was a central component to the story and how strong of a main character Elatsoe was. This is the type of main character I picture when envisioning positive female representation. It was refreshing to read a YA where romance was not a piece and Elatsoe’s asexuality was represented excellently. She’s also not an orphan and her parents play roles in the story, which is refreshing given the over abundance of orphans in the genre. The magical world author Darcie Little Badger created tied in Native culture in a way that felt tender, original, creative, and fun. I hope she continues creating books in this world.

Wasn't necessarily bad, the writing was just too juvenile for me and I had other books I'd rather read. Reads as more middle-grade fiction than YA.
