Beautiful writing as I expect from any Alice Hoffman book, but the plot was a little thin in this brief middle grade novel.  We will read the next one and I'm looking forward to seeing where the characters introduced will go.

Hoffman is such a lyrical writer...her books are like poetry.

One of my favorite books ever! I read it initially in childhood and still think of it often. It's a really moving story about trauma and resilience. Despite the book being so short, the characters are really vibrant. There's some beautiful symbolism as well. I really need to give it a re-read soon and add my reflections from my adult perspective!

I read this book when I was super young and it has stuck with me for many years. I haven’t read it in a while, so it may not have the same impact it did when I was younger, but I remember it being very lovely.

I read this book every year. It's a beautiful story that captures my heart everytime I read it. It's fairly small, but it grabs your attention and keeps it. The plot is simple, but wonderfully done.

Lyrical and sad. Beautiful words, not much plot.
