It was definitely good, but I’m more of a Treasure Island gal. He managed to be scarier in that one than he did in this, but that could also just be the fact that I’m in the unfortunate case of having known the twist for almost 140 years, which isn’t the authors fault 😅

Classic for a reason, good for its time and highly influential for a “split personality” horror.
I feel you can definitely tell it was a penny dreadful, this was harder to read compared to other horror works of the time like Frankenstein. What I found more interesting was the emphasis on hubris and morality, which still rings true today.
And obviously RLS is an iconic author, it was cool to read a non-adventure book from him
