This book rightfully receives praise for a myriad of reasons. What I personally found most captivating is Achebe’s fluency of both groups of people in this book. It’s a given that an author writing about the Igbo people would know the culture, but his ability to dialogue and think as a white, colonial Christian in a realistic way displays Achebe’s genius.

Although this was an interesting book, I can't describe it as an enjoyable read. An important perspective, yes, and therefore worthy of being read, but not the sort of thing to curl up with in a chair for a cosy afternoon of reading.

As a portrait of masculinity, fear, and colonialism this book is a masterclass and an absolute classic.
