Everything about this book was okay to me, which makes it a solid 3 star book for me. I liked it enough and it was a fairly entertaining story for the most part. Nothing amazing, but not too bad either.

The characters were all decent for the most part. Eva was the one we saw most and we knew most about her. She was strong willed and a fighter, which I really liked about her. But I felt that a lot of the other characters like Pink, Min, and Leroy were so underdeveloped and one dimensional. I did like Vakar though, he was probably my favorite character in the book.

The plot was a little weirdly paced for me. There was a ton of action, but there were some stretches were the story went off in weird directions that didn’t feel natural. I was interested in the plot though, and I was entertained for the most part. I do wish we got some more backstory on the characters though, there were certain events that were constantly brought up but never explained.

This was a solid debut novel; one that I enjoyed reading. I’ll probably wind up reading the next one as well, because even though this ending was tied up pretty well I liked the world enough to read another story in universe.

I wanted to love it, but it just doesn't feel fully developed to me. Plot lines jumped all over the place, characters and the main villain felt shallow, and there were so many details in the story that didn't connect to anything significant.

I wanted to enjoy this book, but something about the pacing was off and left me feeling like we were skipping or breezing over the juiciest parts. I wasn't eager to pick it up and finish, which was getting in the way of other things on my reading list, so I called it at about the halfway mark.

A new favorite of mine!
I loved everything here and especially Valdes’ creativity when it comes to inventing alien species is astounding to me. Be it delicate neck ruffles, cultish parasites, twitching palps or body smells that convey emotion, her detailed ideas make the story worthwhile.
Can’t wait to reunite with the crew in volume 2 and 3!
For fans of Becky Chambers and Megan O’Keefe.

I LOVE funny and quirky space adventures and now one with a Latina main character!? I loved this book.

My favorite thing about SciFi is that it’s a genre that allows you to be as creative as you want, and Valdes did just that! Psychic cats, dinosaur orgy, a main love interest whose emotions you know through his smell? THIS is what I love.

I also really enjoyed how the use of Spanish and Latin American culture wasn’t justified. It just existed and that was fine!

I loved Eva as a main character, she was funny, sarcastic, grumpy, and I want her to be my best friend. Vakar is my love, I’ll protect him till the end of time.

This isn't the kind of book that will have you constantly turning the page, but instead is a book you can easily put down and pick up at another time and still have fun.

Also, it had Star Wars references, so it immediately won me over
