Trigger warnings: abandonment, death, lying, blackmail

I've been on a historical romance kick for awhile, and this series kept coming up as similar to the other books I've been reading so I figured I'd give it a try. I thought the characters were really entertaining; I specially liked Minerva and her sisters. They were all unique and funny and made the story very lively. Though I wasn't the biggest fan of the male love interest to be honest. I felt like his personal struggles were mostly fabricated or incomplete information that made the plot almost intolerably dramatic. However, I laughed a lot over the absurdity and enjoyed how the romance developed. As I really enjoyed the side characters, I am hoping the next two books in the series are just an entertaining but maybe not so wild haha.

An enjoyable read but nothing revolutionary. I liked Minerva a lot, a strong, independant, funny fmc is always essential to me. I liked Diana a lot too, and her ribbing with Giles, so I will try their book, however it will take a lot for me to warm to Vee before her book. I know she’s meant to be only 17, but she acts like an eleven year old. I liked Hugh, he was charming and funny but I loathed the constant reminder that philandering was in his blood. We get it, but it was repeated both in his speech and internal monologue way too many times. I felt the ending was really rushed, for quite a long, drawn out story, everything wrapped in a bow so quickly at the end, it almost gave me whiplash. Other than that, an enjoyable read with some very funny moments.

The best way I can describe this book is…chaotic.

This book starts when Hugh Standish’s mother writes to inform him that she’s on her way for a visit from across the pond to meet Hugh’s fiancée Minerva. The only problem? There is no Minerva. Hugh made her up to get his matchmaking mama off his back.

When Hugh happens across a woman in distress, and learns her name is also Minerva, he forms a plan — he’ll pay Minerva to pose as his fiancée during his mother’s visit.

Instead of telling his mother the truth, Hugh keeps up the lie with a plan that just keeps getting more complicated, including a sister who refuses to lie, an elopement plot between his fake fiancée and best friend, a hired actress to play a long-dead mother, and a blackmailing father.

This cast of characters could have set the story up to be really fun — except all the lies cause a lot of miscommunication between Minerva and Hugh — and there’s also the little fact that Hugh believes it’s “in his blood” that he cannot marry a woman and be faithful because of his lineage.

I read the summary so idk what I expected. Everyone lied their way through the book while tossing out anachronisms like, “you saved my bacon” and “I call dibs.”
