Yay for lesbian vampires but I wasn't a huge fan of the style. Contents are somewhat surprising for the time but I struggled to get into it.

"Carmilla" is a short story about vampires. It mixes romance and horror and lays the foundations for what vampires would be.

I know it's hard to judge a gothic classic by today's standards, yet this story stands the test of time gracefully.

Although it may feel slow-paced, the gothic style helps make it easy to immerse yourself in the story.

This was a great short read that very quickly immerses you into a world of dark forests, gothic castles, and mysterious women. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the setting and towards the end the laying out of vampire lore. What I felt was missing was more depth to our main character Laura and more background to our mysterious stranger Carmilla. Though perhaps that second part is more intentional.

It’s a novella so totally makes sense we don’t get more but that’s what I would have loved along with more of a satisfying conclusion. What we got was not much of a battle but more of a convenient end which felt rushed.
