My favorite arc is the Mugen Train because of Rengoku and what his strength taught Tanjiro and the rest. because while it highlighted their strength, the final battle also proved how strength and power don’t happen to Tanjiro in an instant. The short intermission spent at the Butterfly mansion where Tanjiro worked on mastering his breathing was building up to Tanjiro having to witness Rengoku’s death because he couldn’t be powerful in an instant. And I think all of that hints at how this manga values persistence and grit over a kind of destiny-endowed power. We keep seeing how they come out stronger from all they had to endure.
I cried when I watched the movie. I feel the same emotions reading it too. Rengoku’s mother fetching him as he dies… and the flashbacks of how she taught him about using his privilege (strength)… and the messages he left for his beloved brother and his deadbeat of a father… he’s really the superior hashira and he really is gone too soon.
That this is the first of the volumes that I have given any star ratings is also intentional. I cannot enjoy a lot of the sexist underpinnings that some of the plots and characters. I know some of it may be a choice given the time period but at the same time, I just cannot. And this one seemed to be a volume that didn’t have much of that…

Doesn't hit a hard as the anime, but still some good stuff.
