The heavy handed symbolism and ineffective cliche love story betray Ngugi as a beginning writer in this novel, however poignant his commentary about postcolonial Africa may be. What I got most out of the novel was reading as a response to Achebe's Things Fall Apart within the context of postcolonial discourse.
