Just one of those books that makes you want to conduct an entire literature review about. Remarkable in its simplicity, and powerful in its portrayal of ideas.

“Simți deodată,mai puternic ca niciodată, rușinea unui popor căruia i se lua pământul, dar era forțat să muncească pe același pământ; simți umilirea de a plăti impozite pentru o guvernare despre care nu știa nimic.”

A short, simple, effective novella of early colonial Kenya (and particularly the Gikuyu people) that sets up a number of oppositions, all divided by the (physical and metaphorical) river between.
It is almost a parable in the sense that it is almost a moral/spiritual lesson, but perhaps a moral/spiritual quandary would be a more apt description. There is no spoon feeding of pat answers, just a series of dilemmas.

reading random sec sch lit texts donated to the void deck community library #2. quite exasperating reading abt the villagers trying to tear each other apart. but it's all the white man's fault for coming in the first place

A powerful story about the destructive nature of colonialism. But it also illustrates the dangers of being overly reactionary in the face of change. Waiyaki represents a middle path between tradition and progress, he seeks to take what is useful from the white missionaries, like education and certain types of modernization, while still staying true to tradition. But when factions form he is unable to convince his people to walk a moderate middle road.
"Profoundly allergic to the simple" that's how the forward describes Ngugi, and it's true. He deals in a level of nuance that's truly reflective of human dynamics. A touch slow at times, virtuosic at others, I could see him coming into his voice here. I look forward to reading more of his impressive anti-imperialist ouevre. This man reps Africa, and African autonomy loud and proud and with no shame in sight.
