Very trope-y but enjoyable slow burn romantasy with good worldbuilding and magic system.

Could easily have been a longer book to develop the magic system a bit better but hopefully the next book will manage that. Gives more of a sci-fi vibe with the worldbuilding including spaceships.

Romance was very slow-burn and I appreciated that.

At times I found it very topical and hard to read as a form of escapism with everything that's going on in the world. This book handles land invasion and genocide and the villains acting like they are the righteous heroes liberating a rogue state.

Triggers: GENOCIDE

Firstly I was not aware that this was fanfic when I pre-ordered.

Don't read on if you're super defensive of this book. Don't read on if you have not read the first part of the book.

I think that's ultimately what made this book not work for me. I don't think the author really thought about the message her book gave when she edited it to get it published. Unless this was deliberate, in which case I'd mark lower stars. The first part of the book is entirely different to the rest, it's rushed and not well done. The world building doesn't really exists, she tells us rather than shows us. We supposedly start in the middle of a war, it's not a war it is a GENOCIDE. She even refers to this a few times in the book. This is where my main issues arise, despite whatever his name is being part of the genocide of her home she then decides obviously she loves him because he's big. This person and this person's father literally decimated your home and would have completely exterminated you had you not relocated sneakily. You don't fall in love with him. Genocide is not sexy, it's not romantic and given the current world issues it's definitely not something I'm willing to overlook for the sake of a good bang.
