What a waste of time. This reads like like a poorly executed/edited fanfic with a lure of enemies to lovers and no substance. The pacing was just awful and I kept holding out for more but it just kept getting worse and worse. The whiplash I got from these characters makes me wanna sue. How do they jump so lamely from “I hate them, they’re my sworn enemy” to “there’s something about his eyes.” (Insert puking noise here) I’m not sure who the target audience was for this but it certainly wasn’t me. My only regret was giving this book so many chances. There are much better enemies to lovers books out there folks!

Update: upon further research it was a fanfic.. fml it’s still bad!

good book, i enjoyed the tension and it had very cool world building. only sad thing is it didn’t end in a cliff hanger

Another day another published reylo read. I am so sorry to the haters but I do love what these fandom writers do with their interpretations of these characters. I wanted to rate it four stars due to some of the weakness of certain plot lines and weirdly executed magic systems but then I remembered I rate compelled on entertainment value and I did indeed feel the momentum of this one once I got about 40% in. Even though this is reworked Star Wars fanfic I do find that the author did a good job pulling out the Star Wars lore/history/magic and replacing it with very different ones to create its own unique high fantasy feel. If you’re aware of the background you can see the fic scaffolding however which I actually like trying to figure out the parallels. I also liked that this enemy to lovers story does actually spend a lot of time actually showing a lot of back and forth between the two as Talasyn and Alaric both struggle with their feelings for each other which still remain very unresolved by the end of this book. I feel like too many enemies to lovers skip right over the enemies part with very little of the tension that draws people to the genre in the first place. Speaking of tension I will most likely read (from the beginning) the fic it is based on to just go ahead and a) spoil myself on the most likely large plot points of the series because I gotta know and am impatient and b) see how much rework the author did to publish as it is honestly one of my favorite parts of published fanfic. And then will still very much be reading the next installment A Monsoon Rising when it comes out at the end of this year.

concept was interesting but it was nothing more than that; a concept. worldbuilding was unexplained, and the magic/technology parts were very confusing. the writing was very poor. none of it was original. not happy about the love interest being responsible for the death of the protagonist’s friends and family (????)
