OK I don’t think this needed to exist.

I haven't read any of the Shadow Falls series yet because I want to read them in chronological order, but if they're all like this I think I'll like them very much. The story was a good introduction, I think. You got a taste of the authors style and word building and such. It was an easy and quick read and I liked it. 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Got this for free a few years ago before reading. Short Novella / Story.
Should be integrated in one of the other books or an Omnibus Edition.
Review to follow soonish
Ok, so it was not soonish. Sorry. Now it has been so long, and the book is so short, I do not really know how to put it. So instead a short description: MC is Della, and how she ended up at Shadow Falls. Nice add on, but not really needed as background.

I love Della's character. She's hardheaded, independent, and loving. She is a great heroine. The plot line is good because the vampire virus is spread in such an original way. Chan is an asshole and I hope he gets whats coming to him. I loved that she is strong enough to say no to Chan and make her own decision. That is not an easy thing to do. I loved the way you can differentiate the different species and the club was a fun part of the story. Can't wait to read Born at Midnight.

An origin short-story for the Vampire character of Della, from the larger Shadow Falls series.

Unfortunately, his reader wasn’t able to find any of the characters likable. Della’s parents were good-cop/bad-cop one-dimensional; her boyfriend had no discernible personality; and her supposedly dead cousin, Chan, had little by way of backstory. Della herself is angry, self-pitying, and bull-headed—living in denial through most of the story even when faced with glaring evidence of the supernatural evidence in her very blood. She continually makes decisions that would earn most heroines the title of “too stupid to live”…so I suppose it’s a good thing she’s a Vampire, and so not technically “alive” to begin with? That point remains unclear, however. Though Chan seems to be our window into the specifics of vampirism, readers receive precious few details outside of blood tastes and preferences… and the fact that they hate werewolves.

Which relates to my greatest disappointment: The worldbuilding was scant. As a result, I can’t recommend this as an introduction or even recap on the Shadow Falls world. While the writing is polished, the overall story isn’t particularly memorable—and for something billed as a YA, it had a strangely New Adult feel to it. I can only conclude that this is the wrong place to try to pick up the series.

I really like how this book tells the story of how Della became a vampire. I really felt bad for Della when she faced all the hardships. I thought that this story was sweet and that it really explained Della's previous life.
