cute but nothing special

none of the main plot points really followed through. tyler’s hockey career and the way he ran himself ragged trying to be successful in his career was never really wrapped up. neither was sera’s diagnosis. and their relationship switched from casual to in love way too easy. like i appreciate that there wasn’t any denial or whatever about what was clearly the foundations of a good and true relationship, but still the whole book just felt too easy

i did like the characters tho. tyler was sweet and pretty hot and seraphina was enjoyable to read about- funny and emotional evoking. they were cute together too, and honestly as left field as it seems, ill never be mad at an epilogue with babies and marriage and happiness. as i said, i had mixed feelings abt the progression of their relationship but for quick and lighthearted fun, im not too mad about it

This book was good, and it lived up to my expectations. I loved the characters (as always), and they were the best part of the book. But just like Offside, the pacing was really weird. It felt like nothing was happening during 95% of the book, then literally all of the plot happened in the last 50 pages. Some of the character development fell flat as well - not that it didn't happen, just that there was no clear path from point A to point B for the characters, if that makes sense.

I wish we could have had the scene from Halloween as like a prologue or something. Without it, their meeting also fell flat because the reader couldn't come to the same realization as the characters. Not very important, but something I wish was there.

blitzed through this on a flight and my fave of the 3 hockey romances i’ve read thus far. we stan no third act breakups and a previously overbearing dad advocating for work life balance

I really wanted to enjoy this book as much as I did for the first book in this series. However, I found it had the basis of a good storyline which didn't really go anywhere. There was a lot of sex and miraculously the characters fell in love but they didn't actually seem to develop a connection.

4.5 stars.

This was my first book by Avery Keelan, and it did not disappoint. Shutout is the second book in the Rule of the Game series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Seraphina has just transferred schools and is moving in with her brother, Chase, and his teammates. Unbeknownst to her, one of those teammates just so happens to be Hades, the guy she hooked up with three months ago. She has real life struggles and deals with other medical issues, yet she always tries to put on a happy face and be carefree.

Tyler is kind of broody and mostly keeps to himself. He’s the goalie on the hockey team and his only focus is hockey. He’s intense and just wants to train so he will have a future in the NHL, and with his skill, there’s a high probability of that happening.

When Tyler and Sera see each other, they recognize each other instantly. That one night stand months ago has stuck with both of them because neither forgot or got over that night. While they try to stay away from each other, it’s impossible as they have to share a bathroom. They have a real connection and there’s just no way they can keep denying it.

I actually loved Sera’s character because of how real she was…or at least because of the real issues/health problems she had to deal with. And it wasn’t just mentioned that she had these struggles, but the story actually shows her struggling with it and how it affects her daily life.

Tyler, man. Another book boyfriend. He’s not rude or cruel, ever. He’s so kind and caring toward Sera. He actually listens to her and does little things to help her out and make her life a little easier. He’s also protective and really just wants to be there for Sera.

This was a slow burn with some tension, but all the moments leading up to them finally being together was so cute. I mean, they listened to spicy audiobooks together! Come on, that’s adorable. Okay, and Tyler was just hot…I mean, tattoos and a pierced…yup.

Anyway, this was a great brother’s best friend, college, hockey romance with spice, swoony moments, and some emotional moments as well. I will definitely be reading more of Avery Keelan’s books.
