I don’t typically read science fiction books but after reading great reviews, I made an exception for this one. Universal Love is a collection of short stories, each showcasing a reality wherein our existing technologies are taken a step too far. What’s scary is each story paints a near future scenario - one that feels eerily close to home. If you enjoyed the stories in the Black Mirror series, you’ll likely enjoy this book. But personally, the stories in here I felt were more easily digestible.

An amazing book of short stories exploring how potential near future technologies (and some climate change in some stories) will affect the ways human beings live and relate to each other. These include explorations of romantic, friendship, and family love (or lack thereof). I enjoyed every single one. For me, the stories really hit a sweet spot in between exploring big ideas while also grounding them in the personal stories of the main characters. Definitely worth checking out!

Some of the stories have interesting premises but I felt like they never dug as deep as I wanted them to. I could tell that the author was aiming for something really profound about the nuanced power of love in all situations but most of the stories just didn't get me there. The Year of Nostalgia and Comfort Porn were my favorites.
