A fantastic overview of the accomplishments of the old Near Eastern civilizations, Greece, and Rome in the classical age. Full of wisdom on what art means to humanity and Christianity's role in it. The book is appreciable because of its unapologetically Christian outlook in its judgement of the pagan civilizations, so offers better insight to Christian readers.

It is an essential read for anyone trying to understand the pagan origins of Western culture, such as philosophy, literature, art, and science.

I'm only giving this book two stars, not because most of what is in it is antiquated, there are many books that suffer with this, but because the author was obviously suffering from a handicap. Apparently Christianity was the one true religion and everything else was false. Not a good attitude for a historian who is trying to talk about pagan religions and ancient philosophy...

I think this is my first 0 Stars of 2019!
Disgusting prejudice against the Old Gods as well as an immense example of Christian superiority complex, on a bright side, considering when it was first published, it is quite period accurate.
