Ughhhh this was beautiful. However. Whomst is Peggy’s baby daddy??

So many feels while reading this one. I have been flying through books this year but this one I could not, and ultimately I didn’t want to rush any of it.

So heartbreaking at times….what did I get myself into?
It was the right time for this book, set it late summer just before the start of the school year, it felt like a running metaphor throughout the story.
Wonderful imagery and mood, I felt very much like I was there.

Flashbacks between Amber and Lorna POV were great, didn’t feel clunky or haphazard.
Nancy, the beautiful young mother, loved so much by her husband and children, ripped from their lives and yet none of them could let her go.
Amber and Lucian, thank God for their happy ending. I couldn’t have borne it and yet we don’t know til the very end.
Poor dear Barney.
Caroline, I despise you.
Jon, so grateful for you and your understanding.
Toby, you’ve come home.

Well, this was a giant MEH.

This isn't a bad book, but I didn't really like it. My main point of contention started literally from the first two chapters--a girl born in the 1950s named Amber and a girl born in 1970 named Lorna. This is the only time I've ever felt like an author flat out got the names wrong. Should have been switched. After that, the main mystery for the first 70ish% of the book was "what is the mystery?" This book was ominous--lots of not-so-subtle foreshadowing--but that's not the same as a mystery. It did pick up in the last quarter or so and become a little more interesting, but it wasn't enough to compensate for how boring the rest of the book was.

However, this is compared to Kate Morton and I can definitely see that. I've only read two Kate Morton and I liked one and didn't like the other so much, so thus far I'm only medium on Kate Morton, but someone who is a huge fan might really like this. It just wasn't what I wanted.
